According to Dr. Nguyen Van Duy, a Master of Science and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Health Sciences , Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, both turmeric and honey contain active compounds that are beneficial for stomach ailments. Turmeric contains curcumin, an active compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can directly affect the gastrointestinal mucosa. Honey contains phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which have antioxidant and antibacterial properties and help protect the stomach lining.

"Although it's a relatively easy-to-make and easy-to-use beverage for many people, some groups should avoid it or consult a doctor before using it regularly," Dr. Duy emphasized.

People who have gallstones or frequently experience biliary colic

For people with gallstones or frequent biliary colic, turmeric may stimulate gallbladder contractions; those taking anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, or preparing for surgery should also exercise caution as curcumin may affect blood clotting.

Pregnant women

Turmeric used in cooking in normal amounts is generally different from drinking concentrated turmeric water. Data on the safety of high doses of turmeric during pregnancy is currently limited. Pregnant women should therefore avoid self-medicating with turmeric extracts, especially if the dosage and origin are unclear. If they wish to use it regularly due to stomach pain, nausea, or other health reasons, pregnant women should discuss this with their obstetrician.

People with active stomach ulcers

Individuals with active stomach ulcers or suspected Helicobacter pylori infection should receive proper diagnosis and treatment and should not use turmeric and honey to delay treatment. It is also important to avoid overuse of high-dose curcumin extracts.

People with liver disease or those taking concentrated curcumin

Some reports have noted curcumin-related liver damage in some individuals, particularly when taken in concentrated form or for prolonged periods.

When should you see a doctor instead of continuing to drink turmeric and honey?

According to Master of Science and Doctor Nguyen Van Duy, a glass of fresh turmeric juice with honey every morning may help some people feel better, but it can also cause heartburn, burning sensations, or digestive disorders in others. Whether it's beneficial or harmful depends on individual constitution, underlying health conditions, dosage, and timing. There is no single folk remedy that suits everyone.

"Patients experiencing severe epigastric pain, vomiting, weight loss, black stools, anemia, or persistent pain should seek medical attention for a more accurate assessment instead of self-treating with turmeric and honey," Dr. Duy advised.
