A video showing an unusual living room feature—a well built directly into the floor—has gone viral on TikTok, sparking debate over whether it is a design marvel or a nightmare.

The clip, posted by @erin2nicol on July 2, begins with a wide view of a cozy living room featuring a bay window. As the camera pans toward the floor, it reveals a well situated directly in front of the window. The structure, covered with a glass panel, appears to contain plants inside. A caption on the post reads: “Creepy or cool?? Mixed emotions from people on the well in our living room. We love it.”

Since being shared, the video has amassed 1.8 million views, with thousands of TikTok users weighing in on the unique feature.

Despite the mixed reactions, the well has caught attention at a time when American homeowners are increasingly investing in unique renovations. A 2024 survey by Houzz, a home design website, reported that median spending on home renovations in the U.S. has risen sharply in recent years—up 60 percent, from $15,000 in 2020 to $24,000 in 2023.

Kitchens were the most commonly renovated interior room, undertaken by 29 percent of homeowners surveyed, followed closely by guest bathrooms (27 percent) and primary bathrooms (25 percent). Living rooms were also a priority, with around one in five homeowners (21 percent) making upgrades. The survey noted that living room renovations often took longer to plan than other spaces, averaging 8.1 months of preparation.

While the exact origins of the well featured in the viral video remain unclear, its striking design has made it a focal point of online conversation—splitting opinions between those who see it as a quirky architectural gem and others who view it as a chilling addition to any home.

‘Terrifying’

Some viewers admitted they were unsettled by the idea of having a well inside their home.

Paula commented: “No. Absolutely not!” Another user, Eilidh, wrote: “omg I get freaked out by windows when I’m alone at night, this would be terrifying.”

Others echoed the discomfort, with littlebthedog saying: “huge no! it looks beautiful but oh no that would spook me out.” Aspiring Goblin noted: “I’m just imagining a face slowly emerging from the water and looking up.”

For some, the feature brought to mind horror films. “Omg!! I have never seen anything like this! it reminds me of the film The Ring,” said Haven Candles. Lucy lou added: “It’s cool but I could never watch The Ring again.”
