Brighton make a flying start
Brighton & Hove Albion opened their Premier League campaign in emphatic fashion, sweeping Aston Villa aside 4-0 at the American Express Stadium. Fabian Hurzeler’s side had the match effectively won inside 31 minutes, producing a ruthless attacking display against a Villa team reduced to 10 men before half-time. Victor Lindelof’s early own goal set the tone before Maxim De Cuyper and Jack Hinshelwood, who scored twice in 79 seconds, completed a remarkable first-half performance. The result puts Brighton top of the early table on goal difference and gives Hurzeler his first victory over Unai Emery’s Villa.
Villa had begun with some encouraging moments, with Emiliano Buendia operating as a makeshift striker in the absence of Ollie Watkins. Buendia sent a low effort narrowly across goal, but the visitors’ positive start quickly unravelled. A loose backpass drew Marco Bizot from his line, allowing De Cuyper to seize on the error and strike the post. Lindelof then turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear the danger.
Seagulls punish Villa’s defensive errors
De Cuyper doubled Brighton’s advantage 10 minutes after the opener, arriving to convert Georginio Rutter’s pull-back from close range. Rutter had found space after a long ball over the Villa defence, exposing the visitors’ lack of organisation at the back. Brighton continued to attack with speed and precision, leaving Emery’s side unable to regain control. Hinshelwood made it 3-0 on the half-hour, drifting behind the defence to head in Diego Gomez’s nod-down unmarked.
Just 79 seconds later, Hinshelwood struck again after Joao Gomes lost possession in a dangerous area. The Brighton midfielder collected the loose ball and calmly finished to cap a devastating spell. Villa’s afternoon deteriorated further in the 40th minute when Gomes was sent off on his debut. Following a VAR review, the Brazilian was dismissed for kicking out at Rutter after being bundled over.
Villa left with major questions
Villa offered little after the interval, although Ian Maatsen did hit the side netting during one of their rare attacking moments. Brighton nearly added a fifth when Costinha struck the post from distance and Charalampos Kostoulas converted the rebound, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Even without further goals, the hosts remained in control and ensured Villa failed to register a shot on target. It was Villa’s first full Premier League match without a shot on target since facing Newcastle United in October 2022.
The statistics underlined Brighton’s dominance, with the Seagulls generating 2.96 expected goals from open play in the first half. That is the highest open-play xG total recorded in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League match since 2021-22. Villa became only the third side on record to trail by four goals at half-time on the opening matchday of a Premier League season. With several key departures and uncertainty surrounding more senior players, Emery faces an immediate challenge to restore cohesion after a nightmarish start.
