Spurs target wide attacker as De Zerbi promises another ‘bomba’
Tottenham are continuing their search for a wide attacker as head coach Roberto De Zerbi looks to complete the next phase of his summer rebuild. Spurs have already invested heavily in their midfield and defence, including club-record signing Sandro Tonali for £100m and Mateus Fernandes for £85m. The club’s total summer spending has reached £237m, but De Zerbi has made clear that further additions are expected. A new forward is understood to be among the priorities, with the Italian describing the potential arrival as another “bomba”.
Cody Gakpo has emerged as one of the names being discussed, although a deal would be difficult to complete. Liverpool would be reluctant to sanction the Netherlands international’s exit without first securing a replacement. Gakpo still has four years remaining on his contract and is not expected to be available at a low price. His experience and ability to operate centrally could also be important, particularly while Hugo Ekitike continues his recovery from an Achilles injury.
Liverpool consider Barcola move
Liverpool are expected to make a formal approach for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola if Gakpo’s future becomes uncertain. However, PSG are believed to value the 23-year-old France international at around £145m, making any negotiations complex. Barcola would offer Liverpool a high-level replacement on the left wing, but the proposed fee underlines the scale of the challenge. Should Gakpo leave and Barcola arrive, Liverpool’s other wide options would include teenager Rio Ngumoha and new signing Victor Munoz.
Gakpo remains one of the more experienced attacking players in Andoni Iraola’s squad, and his versatility gives him added importance. He can play across the front line and provide cover through the middle when required. That flexibility could make a potential sale even harder to justify unless Liverpool can bring in a major replacement. Barcola has the profile to fill that role, although PSG’s valuation may force Liverpool to consider alternatives.
Savinho also on Tottenham’s radar
Spurs have also explored the possibility of signing Manchester City winger Savinho. City are aware that the Brazilian is interested in joining Tottenham, although no formal bid has yet been submitted. Savinho signed a new contract last summer, meaning City would likely demand a significant transfer fee. Pep Guardiola’s side would also want confidence that they can recruit a suitable replacement before allowing him to depart.
De Zerbi recently indicated that Tottenham could sign two or three more players before the window closes. “The transfer market, it's not finished for sure, but we completed 60 per cent of our project in the transfer market. Now we have another bomba!” he told football.london. Explaining his comments, he added: “I think Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Senesi, Robertson are bomba. For me, top player for us.” The coming days could therefore be decisive as Spurs attempt to turn De Zerbi’s latest transfer promise into a completed deal.
